Yesterday I ran an unexpected half-marathon, completely unprepared. My friend Arthur signed up for an ultramarathon near Gainesville, FL and I drove up to crew for him on Friday. After completing 50 miles, his pace slowed down and he asked if I could keep him company until he finished 100 km (62.1 miles). While I haven't run a mile in years, I figured it wouldn't be so bad, after all I was accompanying someone who had already run 50 miles non-stop. I figured wrong. I had the wrong clothes, my shoes were not meant for trail running, and I hadn't been eating or drinking properly all day since I was driving back and forth between aid-stations to check up on him. While it was no walk in the park, we kept a good pace and he finished 100 km in 16 hours 45 minutes.
Almost immediately after the race, we got in my car and I started driving back home. I drove through the night and got home early morning today. We rested until noon and watched movies all day. He's flying back tomorrow and then it's life back to normal. Except my legs are still pretty sore from the unplanned half-marathon.
