Of all the ways I could have imagined starting the year 2010, I highly doubt "working 16 hours straight on New Year's Day" would have been on the list. At any manufacturing or warehousing company, year-end financials are always a big deal and since I maintain the core database, I have to make sure all the transactions are done properly. In addition to that, long weekends are perfect time for me to make upgrades to our computing infrastructure. So this means I've had a boatload of things to do between Dec 31, 2009 and Jan 4, 2010. I'm about half-way done and as of yet, no major catastrophes.
Oh ya... Happy New Year!
Random notes from my school report cardsSun, 4th Nov '07, 1:15 pm::
I'm filling out the application for the Masters of Science in Innovation Management program at University of Tampa, starting September 2008. It's a long process and I have to get many documents in order before I submit the application. I ran across my old file of school report cards (all the way from nursery to high school) and it's pretty interesting to read what my teachers and mentors said when I was a little kid in India. Here are some of the more interesting random bits I found:
- Jun 25, 1984 - Nursery: "Intelligent, but careless." A in Reading and Parts of the body, E (average) in Drawing and Coloring and Hand Work.
- Dec 23, 1986 - Pre-Primary III: "Punctuality - often comes late. Went to zoo and enjoyed himself. Behavior - tends to be mischievous at times." A in Spelling, C in Hand Writing (thank god for computers!).
- Jun 6, 1988 - 2nd Grade: "Very intelligent child; very exact, perfect and quick in his work; very cooperative and helpful to others; handwriting needs improvement." 50/50 in Number Work.
- Apr 28, 1990 - 3rd Grade: "Grasping power is very good, tends to be careless, speech training required." Won 1st prize in Three-legged Race. A in Spelling, Science, General Knowledge, and Number Work.
- Apr 15, 1991 - 4th Grade: "Intelligent but tends to be selfish and not friendly or helpful." Punctuality: C, Perseverance: A.
- Apr 17, 1993 - 6th Grade: "Sincere and obedient boy; Class Rank - 1st; Result - Satisfactory" (I don't think my class teacher liked me much.)
- May 12, 1994 - 7th Grade: "Outstanding in Volleyball; Class Rank - 1st." Weight: 51kgs / 112 lbs.
- Apr 21, 1995 - 8th Grade: "Promising student; takes interest in all games but must try to excel in one; good in rifle shooting; sober and well behaved boy." Height: 5'8 (same as today).
- May 15 1997 - 10th Grade: "Can do better; work harder; improve the quality of answers." Highest score in Language: 185/300, Social Studies: 159/200. Poor in Math: 59/100 (stupid Algebra!)
After 10th grade, personalized report cards gave way to computer printouts of standardized test results with percentile scores. TOEFL: 99%-ile, SAT: 95%-ile, GRE: 80%-ile, 4 years of college GPA: 3.9. If my work gave out report cards with little notes, I think it would still say: "Punctuality - always comes late. Takes long lunches. Must stop wearing free T-shirts and torn jeans to meetings with prospective business partners."
I also have to update my resume for the Masters application. Here's hoping I make the cut.
Sand grains keep falling on my serverFri, 30th Dec '05, 10:50 pm::
The Falling Sand Game I am hosting on my server is attracting over 30,000 different people each day to my website. Kinda interesting. Till Dec 25, about 200 people a day visited different pages of "chir.ag". Now in just 4 days I've had over 9,000 people check out my maps and over 25,000 people check out this page (my blog). The good news though is that my server's able to handle all this amazing amount of traffic without showing any signs of slowing down. After being linked on Digg, Reddit, Delicious, MSNBC and tons of other popular websites, I'm kinda proud of my little server holding up just fine. Head over to my /tech blog to read more about Little Servers, Big Performance.

Studying for Comp Sci. GRE for the next two days non-stop. Four finals and one final paper/assignment next week. No sleep till 19th Dec.
Mon, 8th Dec '03, 3:55 am::
Took me about 34 - 8 = 26 hours to complete my final project for computer graphics. I'm quite satisfied with the results. Will post a few screenshots here later. I have Econ assigments due Monday and Tuesday and a comp sci homework due Tuesday. After that, gonna study non-stop for my GRE Comp Sci subject test - exam on Dec 13. This is one of those really big exams that will probably decide the course of my life. Much more strongly than all the graphics projects, all my web sites, and all the studies I've been doing in college. So I am gonna try really hard to do well in it.

Sometimes things go so fast. I had my CS Graphics exam, told the professor that I wish to work as his research assistant next semester and that I'm applying for Grad school next year. Also signed up for GRE Computer Science subject test (Dec 13. is the test). At the moment, top schools on my list: Rutgers, Princeton, MIT, and NYU. I'll probably apply to a few more schools in NJ/NY and Boston area. Let's see. Ideally I would just like to keep my current job, get into grad school and pay for it myself, instead of becoming just another Teaching Assistant (TA). However, if I get to be a Research Assistant (RA) for some professor, that would rock, cuz then my tuition would be free and I'd get $1500 a month for living expenses (which is better than my current status - since I'm paying a hell lot for tuition).
But I live cheaply anyway, so I don't care about the money at the moment. I just want to get into a good grad school and see where it leads me. Damn can't believe it's Nov. 2003 already and I'm applying to grad schools. Huh. Oh well, got 2 projects due this week and one major one due on Monday. Gotta get back to that (and lotsa client work too!)

It's June 4th. Guess what the temperature outside is? 55F! It SHOULD be about 85F right now, prolly 95F. Damn it's cold. And raining. I feel like I've been living in London since last 3 weeks - 2 days of sunshine and 19 days of rain. I don't like too much sun either and would rather have a decent cloudy day than a burning hot sun, but this weather is too much even for cold-loving me. Hell last year (Dec., 2001) it was 60F in mid-December on some days! Forget spring, we don't even have a summer now!

Oh baby! I'm going to Salt Lake City!!! I just bought a pretty expensive round-trip ($285 total) from Delta.com! I'm sooooo excited. Can't wait for December 28th :) Actually, considering the fact that my trip is between Dec. 28, 2002 and Jan 5th 2003, the busiest holiday season, the tickets are quite cheap. I'm gonna go skiiiiiiiii!

Kath's friend Astrid was online a while ago and she just told me that I HAVE to come to the Dec. 28th party on campus! Yey. Me glad. But this time, me no drinking. Yuck! I'll just stick to coke cuz it doesn't make me feel all weird the next day. Haha.
My first college partyFri, 21st Dec '01, 7:10 pm::
Phew. Finally got some time to write bout the party last night. Ok, I publically admit it... last night was the first time I actually got drunk! Yep. Me drinkin' alcohol. It wasn't beer. Beer's icky. I think I had like every random drink under the sun... Don't even know what I had. Ok here's what happened basically...
My friend Kathleen was having her old high-school friends over to her apartment to party last night (Thursday, Dec. 20). I had an exam on today at 12 noon. So I wasn't really sure if I should go and party all night or not, but oh well... she was just sooo nice that I couldn't refuse. Plus I wanted to meet all her girlfriends she talked about all the time ;-) So I went and oh my god... were they _____ (insert adjective of your own choice: cute / hot / great / nice / bootylicious).
The agenda for the party was pretty simple:
- Drink...
- Repeat step 1.
Haha! But damn it was fun. See the problem is a lot of people I know read this 'blog, so I can't be really graphic here. In short, I had a LOT of fun. I woke up this morning with no sign of hangover or anything. In fact I am pretty disappointed with the whole getting-drunk thing. I had like 10-12 shots of rum/tequila/vodka/whatever, 5-6 glasses of mixed drinks, and God only knows what else and I still felt nothing! But it was really fun to discover that I could not walk in a straight line! Haha!
There were a few pics taken... and I think I am in a couple of them. Will post the pics in here and on my photo gallery when I get them.
And don't worry Kath. You did NOT spoil me! Remember... I had my first beer before I learnt how to ride a bicycle! But of course the nicest part of the night that made me feel all mushy and blushy... was when Kath introduced me to all her friends and said that I was her bestest friend on campus :) At first I thought she was joking (or maybe a little tipsy) but turns out she was serious... Awwwwww girl! You're just sooo nice yourself. It's really great to have a friend like you :) Dammit! Now I miss my buddies Chetan and Vishal from Calcutta. God I love my friends...
Mon, 10th Dec '01, 3:50 pm::
So I was with Michele today, in the RU Student Center - studying... LOL. Well we did atleast some work. So it's not like we wasted a lot of time chatting about nothing... Hey, she's fun! So who cares! And for the 20 ppl who emailed me asking what happened to the Anonymous Calc Girl, well read the news alert on Dec. 08! It's all there...
Sun, 18th Nov '01, 4:00 pm::
Just got from a Salsa Music Concert performed by the RU-Salsa Band @ Nicholas Music Center on Douglas Campus. It was one of the most wonderful musical shows that I've ever seen. I met a couple of friends (wink* wink*) there and we just hung out for a while. Then I came back home cuz I have lots of work to do.
On 1st Dec. 2001, we are having a House-Warming Party and if you are reading this, chances are that you are NOT invited. Haha. Actually it is just for my uncle/aunt's relatives, 99% of whom I don't even know. Anyways the cool thing about the party is that I'll be hosting a nice 1:30 hour game show for everyone, probably like Movie Bingo, Who-wants-to-be-hundredaire etc. Haha. So now I better get started working on them right away...
